Brock Teacher Candidates are lucky enough to attend multiple Professional Development Days (PD days) throughout the school year. Below is a picture of me--and other Brock candidates--at a PD day seminar about The Occasional Teacher.
This PD seminar provided candidates with a lot of helpful tips and tricks. For instance, we were taught to develop a supply teaching survival kit! As you're floating around a school board, teaching in a multitude of different classrooms, it's important to bring back-up lesson plans, games, activities, and resources for the students. I already knew that back-up lesson materials were a must, but, I had never thought to bring extra supplies for myself--an extra pair of glasses, water, gym clothes, etc.
We also discussed the roles and responsibilities of the occasional teacher; we troubleshooted some situations we're likely to encounter; we talked about how wonderful the job can be! That last point--how wonderful the job can be--was what really sold me on this presentation. As a teacher candidate I've been hearing a lot about dead-ends; about how jobs are hard to come by and how I'll likely have to supply teach for a long while before securing a full time teaching position. This seminar helped me understand that supply teaching can be a very fruitful experience!
Originally, I chose to attend this seminar because I thought it was a necessary evil for an experience I was reluctant to have. Now, with these strategies and a new found sense of excitement and optimism, I feel ready to tackle the world of supply teaching!
